"Real Politics"

By William Markiewicz

Ultimatums to Assad were swift and strong even if nobody is sure that the regime is the guilty party. Two reasons for the high handed attitude toward Assad: the right of the stronger, and empathy for innocent victims. Curiously empathy didnít apply to the gassed Jews. Prevention would have been simple Ė destruction of the railways leading to Auschwitz and similar butcheries would have halted the massive transports. All Europe knew what was going on; the Intelligence Services had to know also. Even when it became general knowledge thanks to Emissaries from Poland, the reactions were, at the most -- phlegmatic. Conclusion? In the Darwinian universe empathy is not equally distributed.
