Catalonia and Independence

By William Markiewicz

Would Catalonia be more prosperous if independent? I suppose the answer is yes. Catalans are industrious and negotiators. They have an independent nature and the crisis in Spain is a supplementary push for separation. Catalans are not Spaniards, and Europe mostly prefers uni-national states. Spaniards and Catalans are like Quebeckers and the English speaking in Canada. How do they manage to cling together? Perhaps because it is not Europe, and Canada is prosperous, attractive to be part of, and, like Switzerland, you feel "elsewhere" passing from Canton to Canton.
