-- in particular in Western Ukraine. During the Nazi invasion many ethnic groups in Europe hoped to obtain independence. It took time for Ukrainians to realise that concerning Ukraine, the Germans had other things in mind. Jurgen Stroop, the destroyer of the Warsaw Ghetto, told Kazimierz Moczarski about small but bold anti-German Ukrainian guerilla units which started to act when the Ukrainians lost their illusions. One Ukrainian in Paris told me: "Before the war we read Mein Kampf and we didn't understand until Hitler came and explained it to us." In spite of all, the pro-Western dream shines in Western Ukraine, even if the pro-Russian trend persists in the more prosperous East.
